Help Me Help Chicago

My name is Katie and I am an international studies graduate of Missouri Southern State University.  I have always been in the pursuit of justice for those who suffer, initially starting out studying as much as I could on human rights and sustainable development for developing countries and now moving into an urban focus. I have for the last year been living with two other girls in a community called God’s Resort.  It is a neighborhood in Joplin, MO that at one time was filled with broken families, drug dealers, alcoholics, and sub-par housing.  These days it is transforming and we are lucky to partner with College Heights Christian Church in their efforts to seek not only social justice for our neighbors but also spiritual, physical, and emotional healing.  If you would like to read more about our efforts there you can check out our blog at www.14thandpearl.blogspot.com
My next big adventure is moving to Chicago in August.  I will be starting a year-long discipleship/ministry program through an organization called Mission Year.  I will spend one year living with a team of young adults completely focused on serving the people in an inner-city neighborhood in Chicago.  This will happen through over a 1,000 hours of community service at a nearby social justice organization like a hospital, homeless shelter, or public school.  We also will be partnered with a nearby church, participating in their worship and serving where we can in their activities.  Finally, we will just be out, walking the streets of our neighborhood getting to know people, finding out how they are doing, and doing our best to use what we have to make a difference, no matter how big or small.

If you would like to read more about my work in Chicago check out my Mission Year blog at www.missionyear.org/blog/katiehargrove or you can also donate to my work there by clicking here.  I am trying to raise $12,000 to reach my ministry launch goal so that my team will be able to minister fully in our neighborhood.
